Errors with my Portable HDD.

Hi, I was watching a movie on my Wii with my portable HDD when I paused the movie and unplugged it from there to use it on my computer but it kept spitting out a cylinder redundancy check error but I could still watch the movie on my Wii and any of my other movies and everything of mine was there but couldn't access it on my computer.

So after a couple of programs and tools I managed to be able to access my hard drive, I decided to copy all my important data before it dies but now I am getting a "Cannot read from source of disk" error.

I can copy small couple of MB files and can run GTA VC off there no problems but cannot copy files from the HDD.

I have yet to try and put it back into my Wii but will do so soon.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Your problem stems from when you puased it and unplugged it. The drive was basically in use when you unplugged it and thats the worst thing you could do. You may be able to download and run the drive makers disk diagnostic software and see if it will fix the drive but you may be out of luck.

The main thing I want to get off are photos which are maybe 100 Mb fully and that's probably the most important thing, I will see if there is any recovery software, by the way my portable HDD is a WD Passport 320 GB.

I tried chkdsk /f and always freezes at 4%.

Also if you can direct me to any recovery software that will work or a program that would fix my problem then that would be GREAT.

What is the exact model number of the drive? You can try recuva but I would wait to see if the western digital diagnostic can repair your drive first.

I tried the WD Diagnostics tool version 11, soon as I start the quick test or the extended test it comes up with an error saying: Cable Test::Read Diagnostics sector error!

I tried both of my cables but that isn't doing the trick either.

I will give recuva a shot and see what results I get.

Sorry jonny, I downloaded a diffrent version of DLGT from another website before you posted your link, I'll give the link you gave me a shot aswell.

Ok good news and bad news.

Good news is the scan finally started to scan.
Bad news is after about 30-40 mins into the scan it stopped and said too many bad sectors.

Where do I go from here? I really want my files that I need.

Does anyone have any clues on how to fix and/or keep my data??

Sorry for the bump I just really want this to be fixed.

If you can't access the drive normally or recuva won't detect any files then you are basically screwed unless you want to spend a few hundred dollars to send the drive to a data recovery center and have them recover your data.

It seems that I can read from the drive fine, just when it comes down to copying is where I get the issue. I tried copying my photos off my portable HDD last night and I was able to copy about 90% before it gave me the "Cannot read from source disk" error.

I also managed to get to stage 4 out of 5 on chkdsk /r but canceled it because it was getting late in the night. I will run again today.

Thanks for all your help and I'm still open to suggestions!
