eSATA question

I bought an HD with a case today, did the install, partition, format.. etc
When I plug the USB it detects it, but not when I plug it using the eSATA.

On my MOBO, there's 2 red eSATA plugs and 2 black ones. I tried both and nothing happens when I plug the cable in.

Any thoughts? Do I have to go in the bios to change something? Thanks.

Your motherboard manual should tell you if you need to do anything special to turn the eSATA ports on. If you tell us what board you have we can look.

edit: You've got any addional power plugs plugged in right?

Hi Cromewell.

After a bit of playing around and rebooting it detected the drive. Although, I don't know if the transfer speed is as fast as it should be.

I'm transfering about 65 gigs and it says ~5 hours. Is that good for eSATA? I did a couple reformats on USB 2.0 but I don't recall the time it took.

My MOBO is ASUS-P5LD2

Here's why I think the speed is not what it's suposed to be.
They say eSATA is 480 Mbps (so that's 60MBps)

60MBps = 3600 MBpm = 216000 MBph

So it's suposed to be 3.6GBpm and 216GBph... no?

Intel core duo 2.13 ghz 2GB ram ddr2.

I stopped the transfers because I knew they were slow as crap.. rebooted and what not. Now the drive doesn't appear anymore, this is seriously ticking me off.

OMG...that's awful... Hmm....Well, what do you see in Device Manager?

Sounds like your computer should run the files very quick... Do you have USB 2.0 Enabled in BIOS?

Probably, I'm going to reboot and go play in the BIOS now. I did a test with the USB 2.0 and it was way faster then the "eSATA".. so something is def wrong.

Good thing I have a shaved head, or else my hair would be on the ground.

BBL, wish me luck.

(lol, the drama)

I guess that's why I will never be a good programmer, I have somewhat lengthy hair...

Anyways... no luck. I'm just doing my transfers by USB for now... I rebooted enough times to try stuff, I don't want to play with it anymore.

Hopefully it's just a minor adjustment that can be easily done.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help. :)
