Ethernet hogging bandwith ?

Hi all,

Been trawling the internet for last few weeks tryin to find an answer, but getting confused with all the tech talk.

I wonder if someone can help please.

I live in a shared house and up until a month ago it was just me with the NETGEAR router in the hallway. I never had a problem with internet connection or speed on my laptop( wireless). Then a couple moved in upstairs with TWO PC's and said they would need the router to be in their room as they HAD to connect via the ethernet as their PC's would work wireless??

The problem is now that I cant get on the internet 9/10, if i do its almost not worth it as its so slow/ keep kicking me off. I know they do a fair bit of downloading and online gaming.

My questions are

(a) Could they connect wirless if i told them i wanted the router back in the hallway?

(b) If they ran an ethernet down the stairs would it slow me down again.

They reckon the ethernet cable isnt giving them any preferential bandwith/ improved performance???

Thanks

mark

If you are on wireless, most likely you are getting bad signal or interference from something. They could run a ethernet cable downstairs to the router and then hook up a switch to it to offer internet access to more than one pc. Or you could run one upstairs.

Thanks johnb. So its unlikely im suffering poor performance because THEY are wired? The router is in their room which is directly above mine.

I assumed my wirless is bad/non exsistent because they are wired, i.e getting preferential bandwith?

The landlord has told me he has a dongle he could give them so they could connect to the router "wirelessly", i assume pc's cant connect to the router otherwise?

Pc's can only connect to the router if they use ethernet cables or use a wireless adapter. If you keep getting disconnected then you aren't getting good enough signal, either interference or your wireless adapter isn't that great. You might want to try updating the wireless driver in your system. You do get better speed with using the cable compared to wireless.

Ok, just for clarification, are they getting better speed at MY expense? i.e if they unplugged their ethernet, would i get a better speed/connection?

Again....

You are getting internet via wireless, just because they unplug from the router doesn't mean you will get better speed. If you are constantly getting disconnected from the internet with the router upstairs, you are too far away from the router to get a good signal. A direct cable connection to the router will offer faster speeds because of the signal quality when using wireless.

Either you or them need to run a cable to the router so that both of you can get internet.
