I have an older computer with windows xp on it. It has worked fine and it is wired into my network with an ethernet card and cable. It has a weird problem where the ethernet will say connected for about a second then die then a few seconds later it will say connected then die again. Any ideas?

bad cable, bad NIC, corrupted software. I would start by reloading the driver, if that doesn't work swap the cable, if that doesn't work most likely a bad NIC. Good new is a PCI NIC card is pretty cheap

Yeah I think it's the NIC card especially on older computers. I had a old compaq that I had to replace the PCI NIC card on and it cost me about $20 if I remember right. It's a cheap and easy fix. Just open up the tower, loosen the screws, take the PCI card out, put the new one in, tighten screws, close tower and load the CD software for drivers. All in all about a 20 min. project.

well i bought a new one from amazon and its not working at all, so i dunno i've switched the cable as well

Did you install the drivers for that NIC card? Restore your modem/router settings to default and reset the router/modem manually with the reset button on the modem/router. Have you contacted your ISP? It could be a signal issue.
