hi folks

i just got a new computer and im unsure if it has an ethernet connection

and im unsure if ethernet is still the best way to connect my modem

in the manual it says i have an LAN (RJ-45)

and it says its supported by RTL8211CL gigabit LAN controller

than it says 'this port allows gigabit connection to a LAN through a network hub.

now, is this a fancy way to say ethernet? if not, what is it? and could it be better than ethernet?

thanks

Its just a fancy way of saying it. Although they should be more descriptive. RJ-45 is like a phone jack, but has 8 pins and wires instead of 4. If your plug anything in wrong, don't worry, you cant really hurt anything. It just wont work. Experiment, learn about your computer and everything that has to do with it.

so is it an ethernet connection or not?

sorry to be blunt

YES
However you don't give enough information to make me think it is 100%. Just plug crap in until it works. Router? Switch? Modem? These are different items. So your running just a modem to a pc? Then yes there should be 1 RJ-45(Ethernet) plug coming off it.

yes,
if you have a RJ-45 connection you will be using ethernet cable to plug into it; which is the most common type of connection for home networking.
