EU wants Windows 7 to ship with a choice of web browser

Has anyone else been watching this bullshit? The EU is trying to force Microsoft to sell software from competitors. How stupid is that? Windows 7 is the product and IE 8 is one of the features. If you like the product and features you buy it, if not you don't buy it or buy it and don't use the features you don't like. As long as you can remove IE 8 that should be enough.

And if Windows 7 has to offer choices Mac's next OS should have to as well.

I read somewhere that Windows 7 will ship to its EU customers without any browser at all....although IE8 wil be available to download from M$ website.

I think its a good thing,i dont ever use IE.

Due to the antitrust ruling against microsoft, in the EU they had to give an option of a stripped down version without media player and whatnot, and that ended up barely even selling..... Sometimes the EU makes me wonder lol

Im in favour for a stripped down version,

That way it doesnt install any of the crap i dont need or use such as,Internet Explorer,Windows movie maker,Media player.

I think Paint will be phased out eventualy in future windows releases, theres no point in it because its very basic and you cant realy do much with it,Theres better freeware apps such as GIMp...Theres also the new sniplet tool in 7 which takes over copy and pasting of images.

The EU are a bunch of cry babies, but Microsoft is an evil corporation.....

Hmm

Who to side with?

I am going to have to say Microsoft should be allowed to bundle whatever god dang software they want to in their product, as long as it doesn't violate any anti trust laws against third party competitors.

IE sucks and I will never ever use it, and I will never ever use WMP either.

I fully agree...Microsoft develops the operating system...they can put what ever they want in it. You don't have to use it (IE8, WMP, ect...) if you don't want to. I just uninstall all that crap anyway;)

***EDIT***

Many people don't know how or just don't load custom software. The people who can load custom programs will load em and Windows does not have an issue with it. It's fine the way it is:)

I'll side with MS on this one, I think an OS should come with some standard things already on it even it those things suck. Most of their software is already stripped from Windows 7 and is downloadable in the form of the Windows Live Essentials pack. I don't like IE8 but the new Windows Media Player is great, I haven't found anything wrong with it and it isn't nearly as much a resource hog as previous versions.

That is the main argument that most users don't know the differences of the software packages out there, so therefore MS is killing all competition by putting in bundled software.

See the thing is, this will drastically change over the next 10 years since every kid is now pretty much using a computer at age 5 in developed nations. Those nations that catch up, like Russia and China and India for example catch up really really fast. India has some of the world's best programmers right now, and China is getting up there too.

Since Microsoft does not build computers and they are just a software company that puts them in direct competition with all other software companies and that means they must adhere to free enterprise laws. If Microsoft were to build their own computers and their own OS then they would be considered a product company not just a software company.

How are you supposed to download a new browser in an OS that has no browser to begin with?

through an application that gets online, probably like the itunes music store, or through add and remove programs or through windows update.

Plus IE is integrated into Windows explorer. You can type a web address into any explorer window and it will pull up that web page.

I've been following this on tomshardware and you should see some of the people who side with EU. They are saying that IE coming with Windows is killing competition. Sounds to me like EU should do something about Intel dominating the CPU market. Oh wait they already fined Intel over a billion for no reason.

When I finally buy a car brand new from a dealer I think I'll sue because it doesn't come with the correct CD player or speakers that I want. They should give me options. That's basically what it has come down to. Sue for everything.

Actually, @tlarkin windows 7 has the ability to uninstall internet explorer. And @nevakanoza about coming with everything, windows mail(prev outlook express), Windows live messenger, windows movie maker, etc do not come with windows anymore, you gotta download the live essentials.

Yeah like Tlarkin said...through windows update :)
That's just silly. Microsoft should make other companies browsers available through Windows Update?

The thing I find the funniest is that browsers are FREE anyway.

The only thing I use IE for is to get to mozilla.org to get Firefox, and the occasional finicky website.

Granted I have Firefox backed up so I don't need a browser to install it, but most people that buy computers don't really care which browser they use.

This EU crap has went on for a long time, and Microsoft is held to much higher standards then Apple.

Is anyone telling Apple they shouldn't include Safari?...
And Microsoft is evil? lol

The average consumer will probably want to make a simple home movie or edit a photo with their new machine. Also the snipit tool was also in windows vista, but it didn't have near as many features as paint did. I do think that some of microsoft expression's stuff should be implemented in paint. I think it sucks that you need to dl the windows live stuff, it's only a few hundred megs on top of the os.

They dont wanna get hit with another antitrust suit, thats why..

It's just really sad that Microsoft can't make their product without the government (and a foreign government at that) telling them what they can and can't include.

We have the antitrust laws for reasons, so the consumer doesnt get screwed so to speak. But going against intel and microsoft.... excessive to say the least. Go after the oil companies for gods sake.
