Eudora connection issues at a new home address

We recently moved house, and for no reason that I can figure my email program (Eudora) decided that it wanted to have a fit and cease recognizing that I had an online connection. I managed to work through to the point where I can make it download email, but it still won’t send. Can anyone suggest what the issue might be – or why a computer that hasn’t had anything changed throw a fit over a change of location? The error I get when I try to send is ‘550 authentication required’. We’ve used Earthlink for the last 6 – 7 years, so we haven’t even changed ISP.

I tried reinstalling Eudora, which didn’t work either, but I’m getting a pop up that I never saw before – ‘Eudora was unable to update the system registry. Your default mail program has not been changed.’

Any ideas, anyone?

What os are you using? and have you checked your settings for your account i have had a similar problem where the email provider will change its ports or protocols on me with no warning. Like a switch from pop to imap.

Hi again,
Sorry, I missed the fact that someone had replied.

I use Windows 7 (64bit) at present, but the problem was still there before on my old computer running on XP.

I've gone backwards and forwards to all the help sites at Earthlink, followed the instructions, and nothing changed. I even tried downloading a couple of email programs I know that automatically detect the appropriate settings, but unfortunately they picked up that Eudora was on board and simply copied in its settings. I guess my next option might be to delete Eudora and try again with the other programs, though it will be a bit of a pain to go that route.

As far as the ports and protocols, how can I know if they've been changed or are wrong? Are there any earthlink users out there who could give me some details on what settings I should be showing in Eudora?

The reason why you are getting that error is that your outgoing mail server requires authentication.

When you set up your outgoing email server, did you make sure that the allow authentication box was checked?

Hi again,
As I noted in the first email, everything was hunky dory at our old home, and I didn't change a thing on the computer once we shifted to our new house only a few miles away. The authentication box you mentioned is checked, so the issue lies elsewhere.

I also went through that Earthlink page you noted before I posted here. The only thing that I can't check is that I have Eudora 6, not 7, and I can't see that box which checks for Port 587 - doesn't seem to exist in my version.

All I can figure logically is that something about moving from one place to the other has meant that I'm operating through a different server or switching mechanism which requires me to change some kind of key setting - I just can't figure what it is.

I've used Eudora virtually since I got on the net, but I;m getting so sick of this that I'd consider tossing it aside for something else if I could know for sure that I wouldn't encounter the same problem.

Moving to a new house with the same provider will not make you change any settings to make your email work properly. If you can't figure it out, call your provider for support.

If you took the last advice from johnb35 your problem is probably resolved by now. The only difference I can think of between the two locations is if the new location has a poor connection (dial-up or broadband). You would see generally lower transfer rates compared to original location. That could affect up traffic more than down as the max up rate is usually much lower than down.
