Every time I shut the lid...

.....It changes the icons on the destop, pushes everything to the upper left. It's like it's changing the resolution enough to screw it up. Plus it does it with new windows. What's going on???!?!

BTW, it's a Dell Inspiron 9300 with an Nvidia 6800

When you close the lid it may be vibrating the keyboard just enough to see a combination of keys seemingly being pressed at the same time causing the display settings to be scrambled. You may find a loose connection on the inside of the unit in the long run. When going into the right click menu on the desktop itself you can save a custom desktop as the default. When this happens you simply load the save there to see things back. But a loose or intermittency problem is likely to be the cause for this.

I've seen this once where an installation of the latest Video drivers cleared it up. It was mainly due to changing of resolution when the screen saver came on and when ever it hibernated. But that was just one incident- with your problem, does it automatically change when you close the lid? Such as, even when it was closed for only a couple seconds?
