the guy's using xp so he didn't want 2gb of ram and he's not too hardcore so no need for a 8800 but he wanted a kick ass cpu, case and draw tickle me elmos on his discs.

Everything looka alright there. The OCZ memory is at a good price sompared to what is seen at some vendors. The dvd or cd drive(by preference only) would have been Sony, Lite-on, NEC, or some hint on LG.

I was about to say, 1GB of Ram and a QX6600 :). Looks solid, though. Does he play any games that are memory intensive, though?

Gaming or often running multimedia would see a tendency to run smoother with a 2gb setup. For general uses the pair of 512s will work with ease. This is where the dilemna will be if later deciding to game, oc, run large graphics or other "memory hungry" apps where a boost to 2gb will often smooth everything out. To start off and leave room to expand on later due to a budget the prices there are about average.

First you would need to know the type of build that hardwares are being evaluated for. Another thing would any future intent to upgrade the existing build or simply go for a new one. Then you can get an idea of which model for cpu to go for. If it's for a high end gaming build then you look at options for max performance. But if it's a quick build on a limited budget for average uses the choices are adjusted to that.

For the price tag seen there you could still 2gb of performance memory installed along with a fast cpu and half way decent video card. You don't need to spend $500-$800 since the 7950 model there is down about $239 at newegg. So the lower price on the card saves even more.

If there is no heavy gaming and ocing involved Kingston or OCZ value ram should work out on the Gigabyte board there. The one price that is a little on the high side is the Corsair 520w supply while offering free S&H. A 600w Coolermaster was seen for $84.99 as well as an Enermax 435w model at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817171013 and at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103512

Being an Antec fan here the price goes up a little to about same on the one seen at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817371002

i think the corsair is that price because it is a modular psu. that antec quad rail looked nice those especially for a 100 bucks. :)

I don't think that the Corsair is overpriced for what you're getting, but it is more than is required for that sort of a system with a single 7950GT.

As for those PSUs, the Coolermaster 600W is a rebadged Seventeam 500W. Seventeam make some excellent PSUs, although not good enough that their 500W could be counted as a 600W, and I feel that the total +12V@30A is a little low given the $80 pricetag. The lack of an 8-pin EPS connector would disqualify it from my considerations list with an eVGA 680i & that CPU anyway, though.

When comparing the Corsair to the Antec, I'd take the Corsair every time. Both are OEM'd by Seasonic, but the Corsair units are made to a MUCH higher standard, whereas Antec are keeping the costs down.

The Enermax isn't a bad unit at all, although given the pricetag and total +12V@34A, i'd go with the Enhance 5150GH, Overall a better unit with a smaller pricetag.

It's not that the price on the Corsair is above average for what it is but the option to go with another is a consideration there. The Coolermaster is only mentioned due to a good and bad supply list and not a preference. It was one of the few models newegg has instock at this time. To shop around for what you may consider a better one may or may not see a better price. The idea is to lower the total without sacrificing quality.

i would get the corsair if i'm buidling another one for fun.... i just noticed that it is also quad railed.

Both the Corsair & Antec are marketed as having 3 rails, but in practice there's only one in each (which is not a bad thing, IMO).

don't you just hate it when you're about or order the stuff from the list and found out that it is sold out or back ordered :)

Aren't you glad we discussed some alternatives? So which ones were unavailable when going to order? And from which vendor was a question asked earlier? That would help in locating what's already on the list if not a suitable alternate.

A better price on the Antec TP 3 550w model is seen at http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=BA23050
Yeah, that's often the case. Newegg are generally well priced on most componetns, but as far as PSUs go there are better prices elsewhere
How would you compare thet to the Enermax Liberty 500w model seen at http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=BA22027 ?
Actually I've been hearing quite a few complaints about the Liberty's recently. Seems they have a tendency to fail over the long term when pressed. Given that, and the extra 12V amperage available on the Antec, I'd favour the Antec out of the two, even though the performance on the Enermax is somewhat better.

Well, we don't know whether it was the PSU that wasn't available.
And from which vendor was a question asked earlier? That would help in locating what's already on the list if not a suitable alternate.
That would help if the PSU is out of stock. It's difficult to choose between units that may or may not be available.

final compatibility check before i order. i will be building it for him in exchange for a FREE LUNCH :)
