EVGA GeForce 8400 GS

Hey, I've been looking for a good video card for gaming, and recently found a NVidia GeForce 8400 on Amazon for about $30. My question is whether it is good for gaming? Normally I'd think that the numbers higher than 5000 or 6000 from NVidia would be good. Any advice? Should I buy it?

NONONONONONONONO, very old and was a media card then, not sure Battlefield would even boot on a card so weak :P

What's the rest of your specs and what are you planning to play?

I'm guessing you have a stock 300w psu, I have a pc with a 300w psu and it had the 8400gs installed (terrible card, barely plays gothic 2 :D), I didn't want to upgrade my psu so I went for a gt 520 which is still a weak card but plays most games on low or even medium settings. That's what I recommend you should do if you don't want to upgrade your psu. Gt 520s, gt 430s, hd 6450/6550/6670s are cards you might want to take a closer look at, and they are in the $30 range. Don't expect to max out on all games though :D

Yea thanks. :)
The card I'm currently using is the integrated Intell GMA4500 that comes with some Optiplex PCs. It really works fine in most cases, even though it wasn't made for gaming it will run Minecraft pretty smoothly with some shading errors. The only time I've seen it slow down a lot is when lots of GFX is displayed at once. Good example: an open area with lots of people fighting in TF2 :P

Let me tell you something: I had an 8400 GS once upon a time, it's pretty much the worst card I've ever used.

Gaming cards don't really come cheap I'm afraid, something like a GT 630 or a GT 640 would be a better option. You'll probably have to upgrade your power supply too though.

The 8400 is really darted now anyway.

I take it you didnt partake in the FX series when it came out haha. Those were nvidias flop of video cards. When the previous 4 series was outperforming them left and right in DX8 games and their DX9 performance (which they were supposed to be made for) was questionable at best.

If you are using a 300w psu, use a card that uses only PCIe power. I would get a GT 240, as they are really cheap and run most games pretty well at low. It is unable to run BF3 though, get a used GTX 260 for $50 for running all games on low (maybe except Crysis 3), almost all on medium, and some on high.

I was too young to care really when those came out but I heard they were crap. I did have an FX 5200 for a little while and yeah, I've remembered it was the worst graphics card I've ever owned.

I have a fx5200 and a 8400gs, the 8400 is fanless, overheats, and lags hard even on tf2 min settings. The fx5200 needs some special drivers to work with linux. Works for watching movies.
