Excessive GPU temps

Major issue: overheating GPU, 8800GTX.

Minor issues, possibly related: front bottom fan dead (no apparent air flow,
and Hardware Monitor seems to show a dead fan), bottom rear USB ports dead
(but front bottom fan USB ports work).

Here's what I saw when I opened up the case (I've looked at the p5b user guide but
have limited understanding of what I saw):

And a closer look around the GPU:

There's also an eSATA HDD not in the pics.

As far as I can tell there's no real GPU cooler in the case. Is that normal?
(There doesn't seem to be room for one anyway. I wish I had been told
when I bought it.)

I've just discovered that my 8800GTX idles at 76C with normal fan settings.
This seemed quite hot, so I increased fan speed from 60% to 80% and it now idles at 64C.
I have not yet tested it with load, although I've had no trouble playing games like City of Heroes
and Jade Empire on this machine in the past.

I was considering overclocking to play some newer games coming out and that's when
I started monitoring temps and discovered the issue.

Would you be against getting a new case. The one you have looks like it has terrible airflow and is probably why your card runs so hot. Also where your IDE cable is is that where the intake fan for the 8800 is? I would try clearing out as many cables as possible from that area. Would you be able to post a picture of the front intake fan as well. If it is not in that black holder at the front I would remove it to get better flow.

Thanks TR. There is an intake fan in the bottom right corner of the pics but it appears to be dead. Major cooling for the case is probably from the Antec PSU fan.

Because the bottom rear USB ports are also dead I'm wondering if some of the circuitry on the bottom (south?) end of the board is fried. But for all I know it could just be some loose connections. I'm afraid to touch the thing. By the way, the front USB ports -- also connecting on the bottom end of the board -- are fine.

To much stuff at the end of the card. See if you can put the IDE cable under the card instead of over it. And move the wires away from it. Plus fix/replace the front intake fan.
