.exe files not working, could this be down to the motherboard?

Hi everyone,

Pretty much since I got my computer its had trouble playing games. The most common one, in fact nigh on every time I get for example, "game.exe has stopped working" messages. This goes for nearly every game, be it Halflife, Pro Evo Soccer, Saints Row 2, Championship Manager 2010. The exception is COD4 which gives the IWMP3.exe error. The games are proper ones of the disc, I don't download them.

Anyway, since getting my computer a few years back, its had a new hard-drive, new OS, 3 new GFX cards, and completely new RAM. I already know the motherboard has faults (PCI slots don't work), the original processor and power supply is in there too.

My question is, could the motherboard be responsible in any way for these game crashes? I thought it was the harddrive at first, or the RAM, but replacing these hasn't helped. When COD4 crashes it is often accompanied by a blue screen too, most often a SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION.

I bought it as a gaming PC, and can't really do any gaming on it at all. Can anyone diagnose what could be causing all the .exe files to keep crashing?

Check the crash logs in the Event Viewer for more details on those events.

Since you mention that the PCI slots are not working, it sounds like you already have a bum motherboard. You could also be having an overheating problem. Do the games run fine for a while and then crash? Or do they crash immediately?

They crash at random times, apart from Championship Manager which crashes at the same point in the game.

I have two normal fans, one in and one out, and a 20cm case fan on the side. The temperatures have always been on the high side for it though, so I may well have an overheating problem.

Is it possible that the motherboard could be causing the .exe crashes?

With the PCI issue you mentioned up top, I do think the motherboard is suspect. As for the overheating, grab Speedfan and set it up to run while you play a game. See what you are topping out at.

How long has it been since you did a fresh install of the OS? Has this ever been done?

The OS was originally Vista 32bit, then I did a fresh install to see if it would sort it out, then another fresh install with a new HD, and then finally Windows 7 64 bit was fresh installed.

It was a few days after it came out, so just over a month ago. But the problem has been going on since getting the PC.

As far as I know drivers are fine, I use DriverMax and keep them updated regularly.

The computer will bluescreen occasionally when watching video, be it on a browser or Media player, but no other programs crash like the games do.

I would say just replace the motherboard since the PCI slots don't work. Most likely you have other issues that you don't know about yet.
