What is an expanded memory manager? I am trying to run an old DOS game and it says to remove it. Can anyone give me some help? I have an AMD 3800 running windows xp. Any other info needed?

Hello,
Short for Expanded Memory Manager, EMM is a device driver that allows MS-DOS computers to use expanded memory. Intel 80286 and lower computers required an expansion memory board and software in order to utilize an extended memory manager. However, 386 computers and higher require only a software memory manager. A good example of an EMM is EMM386.EXE, which is a MS-DOS memory manager used with Intel 80386 computers and higher.

Well, how do I remove it? To run the game it says to remove it. Can I just remove it on those files or does my computer even have one to remove at all? I am still new to computers and need help. I got a dos emulator but all I can get is the intro for the game to come up. The actual game will not load.

What game are you trying to play? You might be best to reboot in DOS mode and play the game there.

Ultima 7. I didnt think I had DOS. I thought the newer computers used command prompt which was different from DOS. Am I wrong? I may try that later though.

If you are running XP you don't have DOS, I swear that your post said Windows 98 yesterday.

Yeah........it did. I checked it to make sure I had my system information posted and noticed it was wrong. Sorry. I have DOSbox but it gives me the 'remove expanded memory' prompt. I will try the other and check back. Thanks!
