Expected Improvements

Hello,

this is my current set up

P4 3.8
2 gig ram
36 gig raptor HD
ati x1950 vid card
abit duramax mother board
32bit win xp

I encode alot of video meaning taking a movie .mkv file @ 1080p and resize it to burn to bluray disc. i use software called ripbot to do this. This process usually takes about 36-48 hours on my PC.

My question is how much will my encoding time decrease if i update my computer to say

intel 920
asus MB (good one)
6 gig ram
decent video card

im trying to justify a new PC, but if my encoding time drops only by 5-10 hours then im actually rather very disappointed in the people in the computer industry for making such garbage progress in the last 6 years.

thanks for your help

Simon

From a pentium 4 to an i7 920 is a massive jump and you should see very significant improvement if you were to go with a new build such as you listed. Now as far as video is concerned thats something you will have to determine for yourself to see if you are satisfied with your improvements because not everyone here encodes video. But again, if you build that computer listed you will see big improvements as you will find out technology has evolved... Not to mention putting all cores (quad core vs single core in your current pentium system) to work.

Agreed. Saying the i7 would kick the P4's ass is an understatement.

the big difference is that a P4 is the equivalent of a snail on ritalin by todays standards. Even when it was released the P4 was slow compared to what AMD had to offer.
