experiencing large FPS drops

when i play counterstrike source on my computer the fps is at about 40-50 but every second or so i see it quickly drop to soething below 10 fps then is back at 40-50. the drop happens to fast i cant even see the numbers. the only reason i know its dropping is because where i see the fps (cl_showfps 1) the graph gos from green to red. anyone know what this is? it doesnt seem to happen on aim_maps. only or real maps such as D_2
 
could be your ping try going on a server thats close to were you live,
a ping of 120+ would result in a choppy game

nah its not that.

i dont have the greatest computer either. but should it really be dropping so much? i only get about 30 fps on maps.
