Experiencing some lag... Suggestions?

Hi all,

First post, but I figured this was the appropriate place for it.

I built my desktop a few years back and have since been upgrading parts here and there, but haven't changed anything in a little while. Here's what I got:

CPU - AMD Phenom II X4 945 Deneb 3.0GHz Socket AM3 95W
GPU - Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit (Sapphire)
RAM - OCZ NVIDIA SLI-Ready Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2
MOBO - GIGABYTE GA-MA785G-UD3H AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G
HD - Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache
OS - Windows 7 - 64 bit

I'm wondering what may be most responsible for some lag I'm experiencing during gameplay. If anyone has any input as to what may be the most likely culprit, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks, all.

I play BF 3, Dirt 3, Skyrim, and Borderlands, among others. I've seen varying amounts of lag in each of those. I did a re-install of Windows and only after had some lag on Borderlands on the same settings, which I couldn't explain.

Also, for some reason Assassin's Creed II is basically unplayable on high-ish settings, which I thought was weird considering the game is a few years old.

You shouldn't be having as much issues as you are. The only really demanding game is BF3. Do you have the latest video drivers? What make and model of power supply do you have?

According to Steam's driver utility, my drivers are all up to date.

The power supply is a Corsair CMPSU-550VX 550W ATX12V. The case is rather old and probably doesn't keep things very cool, but I'm not sure if that would have this sort of effect.

Also, just remembered having a tough time on Deus Ex : HR. Especially in the outdoor settings with a lot going on, which led me to believe it was a processing thing.

That psu should be fine for the 6870. What about testing the ram with memtest? I have the 6870 and have no issues playing BF3. The only other thing I can recommend is to test the hdd as well. A lot of the caviar blacks had faults with them and I see thats what you have. You can download WD's diagnostic for dos, burn the ISO to a cd and run it.

Actually, I listed the wrong HDD, as the Caviar Black had some sort of catastrophic failure and was the reason for me having to re-install Windows. I now have a Seagate Barracuda 1 TB, 7200.

I see there are many ways of going about a memtest. Is there a thread I can reference for the proper way of going about that process?

Also, thanks a lot for the replies.

Click on free download on the left. Download the ISO file and burn the image to a cd, don't just burn the file to a cd as it won't boot. In your burning software you should see the option to burn/write image to disk. Once the disk boots it will automatically start testing the ram.

The memtest didn't turn up anything.

Could it have anything to do with heat, either because of the case or the CPU cooler?

Are you able to run BF3 on pretty high settings/resolution with the 6870?

I guess my next question would be what you think the most needed/efficient upgrade would be?
