Experts Please Help, Something Exploded!!??!!

Hey sup guys,

This morning i was using my PC to edit and produce a video. After i finish editing, i let the video render to produce the final product.

So while the video was rendering, i decided to take a nap.

When i woke up, the computer was turned off and nothing was on.

So I pressed the power button and nothing happened. Then I tried to turn off and on the little power switch from the back of my PC and then i pressed the power button again and... POP!!! ...something fried and i could smell the burnt smell.

What the heck happened to my PC? I'm just wondering what part had exploded in my PC, so i can replace?

Probably the power supply. But you could open it up and check out the motherboard to see if it has any burned or melted places as in caps/mosfets/resistor.

Sorry i forgot to mention that my PC doesn't have side casings because i removed it on both sides for better airflow. So when i heard the pop, it also showed a little burst of light as well, which wasn't anywhere near the power supply.

I really hope it isn't my power supply because i spent a lot for it. (forgot how much)

You will just have to look around and try to find something and like said, if you have a video card check out that too. If it didnt light up it was probably a cap. If it did light up its probably a choke/resistor or even maybe a part of the wiring on the board or card. Sometimes one of the power connectors will short out. Like said you will just have to look around.

I have another question, so if a video card stopped working, can a PC still be turned on without images being shown? or will the PC not be able to turn on at all if video card is dead?

I am no expert, but I have burned my pc as well :D. Well, i think you would be lucky if it is the power supply cuz as far as I know they are less expensive than your RAM, Hard drvie, graphics card, processors.. isnt it? It was kind of easy for me to figure out, cuz I had a spare desktop, doesnt look like you are that lucky :(. I believe the first thing to try would be to check the power supply, and slowly move on to the complicated ones. if you have a spare desktop, or a friend who is not afraid to help that would be lot easier, otherwise it is going to be a lil complicated cuz all we know is that SOMETHING is burned and your computer doesnt start. Btw is there any indication at all that the motherboard is receiving the power, like a green small light, if there is then, we could rule out the power supply i think.

And as far as the video card goes, you could always try checking by plugging the video output to the mother board built in vga output, you might have to take the video card out of the board for that though.

Good luck! and keep calm :)

Power supply is toast. RMA if possible or replace it with a quality model from a good name brand like Corsair or SeaSonic. Look for a psu wattage calculator online to determine based on your hardware how much you'll need- but get more than it estimates for a little breathing room.

Thanks this might be it.

honestly as we found on a earlier disaster, best way to find the dead part, your nose, close your eyes and sniff around, the part that smells the worst likely will be your culprit

Well if the video card did short out, and it didnt take anything with it. You should be able to remove it and try to fire it up. The fans should be going and you should get a bios beep/ing. But if its not the video card, it still would not fire up. (But you are taking the chance of frying something even worse). I would take a good look around before trying to start it again.

yeah, i think most of the guys are right. The worst smell is coming from the power supply. I've never really smelt anything in my PC, so i don't know if its its natural smell or not.

Thanks, i'll keep that in mind. The one i have now is an Antec TruePower Quattro 850W. Any other advice i should know before i head to the PC shop tomorrow?

If it was your power supply, there's a decent chance it could have taken out other hardware in your computer too, just so your aware of that.

Thanks for the help everyone. It was my power supply that died on me. I went from 850W to now a 650W, but oh well hopefully nothing else fails for a long time.
