explorer.exe CPU problems

I'm not sure what triggered this but for the past few days explorer.exe has been at about 50% CPU... and the CPU usage is about 100%. It's just going crazy. Also, when I delete something the recycling bin icon is removed unless I refresh, and that generally happens with most things on the desktop now.

There's also one file on the desktop that won't delete. It just stays at "calculating". It's a movie file but it is 0 bytes. I thought the problem could be due to the this so I tried taking ownership of the file but that hasn't worked.

It's hard for me to now edit films, let alone browse the internet. windows xp couldn't come at a quicker time.

Sounds like you've got a virus. Download and run AVG free from http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?part=dl-10044820&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlPid=11014801 and Malwarebytes from http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button and see if that fixes your problem. Or, if you have the Windows XP install disk, you could just bite the bullet and reformat your hard drive and reinstall the OS. Let us know what you decide to do and how it works out for you?
