ext HD, xp, no detection!

Hi everyone.

Ok, here’s the deal. I bought an external laptop hard drive from a friend. It runs on USB and my friend says that on his all he does is plug it in and it works fine. 20 GB.

Now, I’m using xp. Shouldn’t it be detected as soon as it’s plugged in?

Why is this not the case? I plug the drive in, and absolutely nothing happens.

It works on my windows 98 BOMB of a computer, and so I’m wondering what the bleep is going on here? Isn’t xp specialised for things like this?

I would appreciate ANY help. Any questions, just ask.

Thank you to all in advance.

is that most likely ur usb port isn't compatible.. it might be a 2.0 and urs is probably a 1.1?( not sure) i believe.. and with that, i believe it should work anyway.. but dont hold me to it.. if not, is the usb ports on ur pc configured?

One possibility is that the drive letter of the HD is already assigned to another drive. I have that problem all the time with my computer at work with all the network drives and such. If that is the case go into disk managment (right click my computer > manage > disk management) and switch the drive letters.

xp auto assigns the letters, i have alot of drivers they never conflict whenever i use a ext hdd xp assigns an unused letter for it.

Well, I have had them conflict before, actually happened again a couple days ago. Granted I have several USB flash drives and a USB hard drive combined with several, sometimes changing, network drives. So just saying its a possibility.

Well the manual for the drive says it is compatible with both USB1.1 OR USB2.0...

How can I know if the USB ports on my computer have been configured?

I HAVE clicked check for new hardware. But it detects nothing. Anyway, on XP it should do that automatically shouldn’t it?

I have been to Disk Management under Administrative, but there is NO sign of the external drive in there.

From that site I got the following:

PCI\VEN_1022&DEV_700E&CC_060000

MFG: (Standard system devices)

Now, may I ask, how does this help?
