extending and re-wiring power cables.

building a very cutsom computer and was wondering if i could get some info.

ive got lots of power cables inside.
the pc has 8 harddrives, 4 dvd drives, card reader, uv lighting, 4 120mm fans and watercooling rig.

dont want loads of power cables rolling around everywhere.
can i easily join say 4 power cables for 4 harddrives? and join the other 4 together?

so that would cut it from 8 down to 2 power connector's?
and same with the dvd drives and other bits and pieces?

also can i extend the power cables?

the pc case is 2ft x 2ft and i would prefer to route the cables around the edges to hide them instead of stretched everywhere.

also, ive got 1 dvd drive that uses ide cable. can i cut the second part off as its sticking out and annoys me :p

thanks for any info.

yeah give me a few mins. the site my build log is on isnt working right now.
give it 10 mins and hopefully it will be up.

here's them pics pc-tech.
its a very big work in progress. just threw some pieces in for pics and to start the build log.

so any ideas on the cables?

ireland im afraid! its hard to get decent components here for a decent price... :(

sadly i have to wait for my aunt to come home from america on holidays before i get decent parts...

but ive got some nice gear coming in april :)

I don't quite understand what you're trying to do. If you have 4 hard drives you're going to need 4 SATA connectors. Most PSU's have a few SATA power connectors on each string of connectors, so that shouldn't really be a problem. As for the power cable extensions, you can get something like this,

As for the DVD drive, what's the "second part" of the IDE cable? I would suggest just getting some SATA drives.

That looks decent dude! Nice job! Looking forward to seeing it when it's done! :)

Yeah, like Taylor said, get some splitters & connectors...

ah lol might not have been so clear.

the 4 harddrives are all sata. so ive got 4 sats power cables. but ive also got 4 akaka harddrive coolers.

so thats 8 power cables!
and then for the dvd drives, ive got 3 sata and 1 ide. so thats another 3 sata power cables and 1 regular.

too many connections when you add in the fans, hdd, dvd's, pump, and so on.

dont want a hundred splitters joiners etc running around the place.

so can i join a few together? to cut the number's down?

the ide cable, has 1 port for the mobo and 2 ports to connect to the drives.
i only use 1 part so can i cut the other connecter off?

You can daisy chain them, but make sure you don't chain up too many, especially if your PSU has multiple rails.

As for the IDE cable, I'm not sure if cutting it off would cut the cable or not, but I would advise not to. If it's really bothering you, just buy a cheap single connector IDE cable.

kornowski i was thinking that, but how would i turn the second power supply on?

dont you need it connected to the mobo to use the power switch?

Well a PSU can also be turned on by shorting out a green and black pin on the 24-pin motherboard connector. Maybe there's something online that'll allow you to control both PSU's with one switch. If not, you could always rig up something yourself.

Yeah, like diduknowthat said, there's a way that you can short it so that it can be turned on without it being plugged into the MOBO...

I think it'd be awesome to have two in there two!

right, found an old hyper modular psu in the room :D!!

excellent. so ill see about sticking that in there when i get home from work...
