External drive problems!

Hi all, my laptop gave up the ghost a few months ago, the motherboard being the culprit. I have taken out the hard drive as it has some old pics etc which i want to keep. Ive bought the relevant usb cable and converter and want to use it as an external hard drive on my wifes laptop.
Now, here's the problem... ive been into disk management and tried to initialise it but it tells me the drive 'is not ready'. I dont get any disk wizard either arghh!

Any ideas guys?

Buy an external case and forget about the converter.

Sounds like converter isn't working.

Don't initialize the disk either as you will wipe it.

thanks for the replies, if the converter isnt working, would the hard drive be buzzing as tho its working?

Do you mean buzzing or spinning?

Just because the power supply is powering the drive doesn't meant the USB - SATA controller is working.

Well, spinning i suppose I was just assuming the cable i was given was working, guess i'll have to try another.
