External DVD RW Compatability

I've created some videos on my computer, and would like to burn them to DVD so I can watch them on my TV. I've been looking into buying an external DVD burner, that I would plug into my computer with a USB.

Does anyone know of a resource where I can look up which external DVD burners would be compatible with my laptop?

It's external so any of them (usb). Make sure it comes with software to do so though. Honestly, i'd look into a way of hooking your laptop to the tv instead as it is a million times more convenient than waiting for the slow process of dvd burning. Does it have a hdmi or s video port?
