External fans are bad?

Lately...the thought of getting a cooling fan has been popping up a lot in my conversations lately. Never really thought about it till lately.

I've been meaning to get one for my PS3 and my laptop....but I also counter-heard that external fans mess up the internal temperature register or SOMETHING like that inside your PS3 / Laptop...although this is directed toward my laptop I'm guessing this might be common toward all machinery...but anyway.

I've been thinking of getting a laptop USB cooling pad for my laptop but wanted to make sure it didn't do anything bad to it....can someone explain the difference if it's bad / good so I can grasp how this works?

All that a cooling pad does is power a couple of fans from a USB socket. I suppose there are some more expensive ones that take readings from the hardware and adjust the fans accordingly, but they don't affect anything internally, they just provide better airflow and more cold air to reach the system

Yeah, I'm looking if I should buy one on eBay right now. They're about 10 bucks for an affordable USB fan to keep it from over heating the way it has been.

My laptop randomly turns itself off due to the heat me thinks after googling why it kept doing that.

This shutting itself off thing is a problem...but I'm wondering if the answer to the problem would be this USB fan? I just want to know if it's going to be what I'm looking for.
