External Hard Drive Backup

I'm looking for an external hard drive with an easy way to back up all of my files, in the range of 250-500 GB. Can anyone here suggest a reliable product with ease of use as a priority?

Also I'd like to know if it's necessary for the drive to be powered.

Most hard drives are pretty equal in reliability. You have an exception here and there, but typically they are pretty similar. Physically larger drives typically are said to last longer, but they do require external power. Smaller laptop-style drives do not require power for most computers, but sometimes have a shorter lifespan. However, either type of drive could last for years or die in a matter of days... Assuming you're within the states, I'd check out Newegg and see what the top-rated external drives are.

Is mobility a major concern? If not, I'd consider a type of network attached storage? I know my Synology has the ability to do network backups. It's quite nice, and makes it very easy to share files among multiple computers on a network.
 
Thanks! I don't have a network, just a desktop. I'd like to have something that backs everything up whenever I turn it on.

I bought an HP simple save 1TB for around $120. It automatically backs up every 5 minutes of idle time. No software, very easy to use. Seems to be working fine.
 
Something like the Western Digital Passport if you want a compact drive, something you can easily carry around with you. If you don't care about that, then the Westerdigital My Book (or something like that). I have used both, both are very reliable, and both are very easy to use.

I would recommend the Western Digital Brand as an External HDD. It may be a Passport or My Book, whichever suites your lifestyle. As of the moment, I am using the WD My Book and never had any issues and problems with it.
