External hard drive failure

Hello,

I have this Seagate Freeagent Goflex external hard drive. After the town electricity got cut off during using it, the drive letter doesn't appear anymore. In device manager I have the disk recognized though but no drive letter anywhere so I can't run something like chkdsk or something. In computer management (win7 64), I have the disk but it gives me the option to initiate it which I don't want to since it will format all the data on it.

I used MiniTool partition wizard to recover data, this program marks it as "bad disk" and all options are grayed out. The only option is data recovery, on about 950 million sectors which estimated to take about 3 months to scan!

I used testdisk-6.14, it recognize the drive, but fails to do an analyze, or even find the boot sector on the disk.

I used Drweb live CD (as a linux) or puppy (slacko-5.3.1-SCSI-MAIN) to see if they mount the drive, but they don't even recognize the hard. haven't tried a real linux os yet.

Any idea?

Have you tryed asigning a drive letter in disk management?

By the way you must ALWAYS have UPS for these things ESPECIALLY if you are doing something important.

I learned the hard way about the UPS and an external hard drive... Now every computer and my router are on one. If you keep an eye out, you can catch them onsale, even brand name ones (APC, etc..) for under $40 I am a big believer in battery backups now, especially because I have not had to change anything because of failure, only memory and hard drive upgrades.
