Hi today i swapped the cable i use for my external hard drive and used it for my psp. When i swapped it back my laptop (running on vista) says it needs to be formated in order to work. But i cant because i have all my important stuff on it like my school gcse coursework etc. i cant delete my stuff please some one help me get my hard drive back thanks alot

I would think something else happened to the drive because switching the cable off temporarily shouldn't matter. Try getting some recovery software and plugging the drive in and seeing what it can find on it.

What make and model is the external drive there?

If you unplugged the cable while the laptop was on ouch! If you reformatted the drive from the usual Fat32 primary and forgot to download the replacement software the setup files would be missing for the auto prompt to appear. The support section will generally explain how to replace those when going for the replacement often a zip file you extract files onto the drive from.

Its and ovation and its 160 gb i unplugged while the laptop was on. please tell me how to get my fiels back i am only 14 also so i dont know all the technical words thanks

how do i get the files of my hd when it needs to be formated. it has all my stuff on and files i need it so badly . please help me thanks

I figured that's how you knocked it out. If the Ovation drive there looks like the one in the image with a power switch leave the power off while still plugged into the usb port and wait until you are at the Windows desktop to turn it on there. Once detected the auto run prompt with the spinning icon of a cd should be seen and likely the installation menu as well.

Most external usb models come with a Fat32 type partition for use with Mac as well as Windows. Once you have files saved off of the drive reformatring it as an NTFS partition it the common recommendation by manufacturers as well as when seeing an external model here(different make) with Fat32 the change over worked well since now the software is no needed.

If it's not seen turn the power off and then back on to see the drive then listed in any explorer window. The support site for that brand should see a faq section for how to see the drive redetected as well as a download to replace any part of the software lost like the autorun file by simply extracting the contents of the zip file onto the external drive itself.
