External hard drive problem

Hello
My laptop died so my friend took it apart and put the hard drive in an external drive. There are some very important pictures and documents on this hard drive and I am having problems getting to the files. I recently got a free older HP desktop computer. When I plugged it in, the computer said I plugged a hi speed usb into a non hi speed usb. What do I need to do to get a hi speed usb on this computer? Also, even though the computer registered the harddrive, I cannot find it anywhere on my computer. It did say it would just run at a slower speed, but I cannot even find it registered in "My Computer". Thanks so much for your help.

The highspeed stuff is just saying you're connected to USB1.1 but your device is USB2.0 compatable. All it means is you won't get the full USB2.0 speeds.

As for seeing the drive, right-click my computer, manage, and disk-management. See if the drive is there and try to right-click and assign a drive letter.

Thanks for your response. My computer tower says it's a 2.0 usb. It also says a hi-speed device has been plugged into a non hi-speed usb port when I plug in my ipod shuffle. My shuffle wont play music now even though itunes said it was updated. I did what you said but I could not find my external harddrive in disk management even though it registered it when I plugged it in. (It gave me a balloon with the same message about the usb) Any help would be appreciated!
 
you can buy a usb 2 pci card and fit that into your pc also im not sure about laptop hdds but some external enclosers require the hdd to be set to master and some to slave try that
 
Is there any USB drivers to install? I had that problem before, I just installed the drivers that came with my motherboard against and it solved the problem.
