External hard drive question!

So I just got a Toshiba 1TB StorE Alu2 3.5 inch PX1635M-1HJ0 external hard disk. It's been connected to my computer all day and the longer it's connected the hotter it seems to be. Nothing extreme that feels uncomfortable to the touch, but it's still hot. I noticed there's a power on/off button on it. Do I keep it turned off when I'm not using it and only turn it on when I need it? Or do I keep it on all the time despite the fact that it gets heated?

What's the difference between keeping it plugged in but turning it off with the button and unplugging it as a USB?

Well, I just realized that it has its own power supply instead of getting power from the usb ports. Unplugging the usb cable will solve nothing, so you would either have to turn switch off or unplug power cable.
