External Hard Drive

If I get an external HD, do those things have RPMs too?

I want to get another HD to add to the 2 in my sig. Like how some people have 2 x 10K's and a 250GB. Can I do that with an external drive? Will it leach off the RPMs of my 2 15K internals?

Also I want external instead of a 250GB Internal so I can take it places, since it will have my music, videos, work, etc. on it.

Do external drives have RPMs?! Do you even KNOW what an RPM is?? LOL, of course they do! RPMs is just like with cars, revolutions per minute. This speed is independent on each drive and will NOT "leach" anything from another drive. Hehe ^^; Funny question...

You can do anything with an external drive you could with an internal. Only difference is the connectivity and speed. Most of them are USB, which converts to IDE. In other words, it's just a case with a standard internal drive in it, so it's upgradable. Or you could get cases and make your own drive.

Drive speed isn't much of an issue with external drives. USB 2.0 is quite slow actually, and drives will not acheive much more than ATA33 speeds. So even a slower 5400RPM drive shouldn't make much, if any difference than some higher performace 7200 or 10K drive. Same goes with the interface(ATA100, ATA133, etc...)

Yes you can add an external Hard drive and it won't leach off RPMs of your existing internal hard drives..

I have Maxtor 300 GB External (USB / Firewire) hard drive and its the best one out there in the market at the moment. It also comes in 250GB and 200GB. You can pick one up from Staples or OfficeMax or http://www.newegg.com - http://www.buy.com. its 16MB cache, 7200RPM. I would rate it 5 out of 5.:D

I thought cause they were USB maybe the RPM thing was different.

How slow is the 2.0 Externals? I dont wanna wait too long for a folder to open lol

USB 2.0 speed is basically the same as internal hard drives or may be faster. Either way you are not loosing speed....you'll be VERY happy with the performance.. :D

external hard drives are basically internal hard drives in cases just faster transfer through usb. and u shuldnt be waiting at all for a folder to open with really and hard drive. that not something to worry about.
