external hard drive

if i connect an external harddrive to my computer..how fast does the saving go? Is it like saving to a floppy (which takes awhile) or is it the exact same thing as it would be saving to Drive C?

I'm considering getting one because i need more space on my computer because of an iPod. Would an external harddrive be a good thing to have for decrypting DVDs onto?
 
What type of hard drive would you get? (USB or Firewire).

Overall: Not as fast as copying/saving to the C Drive. Much faster than saving to a floppy.

i use iTunes on a computer that does not have a DVD player but i know someone who has a laptop with one. Would it be possible to use the external hard drive on 2 computers..transferring files?
 
Yes...if im understanding the question correctly. Im not sure if you could mount the HD on both computers at the same time but you can plug it into the laptop, read/write files, carry it home, read/write files, and then go back to the laptop.

Why do you need a DVD player for iTunes?
Keepin mind that sharing music is entering a somewhat grey area as far as legality goes.

I need the DVD player in order to burn a movie and import it to the iPod.

I'm not sharing music...just using his computer to do the job for me since I don't have enough space and i don't have a DVD player on my computer
 
External HD's are definately not as fast as an internal drive. However, if you are running on firewire or USB 2.0, it isn't that much slower. I have 3 external's set up on my tower at home (200gig, 80gig, and 40gig). I mostly use the smaller 2 for backups, but the 200 gig is used for video storage. I can stream data off of it just fine.
