I just got a WD external hard drive for backing up my computer. Little did I know that the software that comes with it for auto backup would be something that only had a 30 day trial. Not happy about that. They want 30.00 for program. Is there another program I can use that is maybe a free download or am I just stuck with this. I am concidering returning the drive.

Thanks

Which version of Windows are you running there XP or Vista? With the new version you can schedule a complete backup. XP also sees the file and settings transfer wizard for scheduling there.

Running a WD usb/eSata model I disregard the software that comes with the drive entirely since I simply reformatted the factory Fat32 partition to NTFS 5.0. Working with large video captures the old copy + paste of files and entire folders usually saves the effort of buying or browsing for a program.

There's an endless number of freewares along with the usual retail programs to browse through. The freeware guide shows just a chunk of the volume available depending on what OS you run. http://www.freeware-guide.com/dir/util/backup.html

The guide for using XP's own backup utility is seen at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/bott_03july14.mspx There's no worry about any retail programs or finding just which freewares you will want there.

But the list goes on as always with freewares for all versions starting with 98 upto Vista. Snapfiles has one considered for use here called ViceVersa seen at http://www.snapfiles.com/features/viceversa-8032-489168.php That's a bit more flexible then many.

Another bunch is mixed along with other types of utilities including Recuva a small tool for undeleting any files you accidently send to never, neverland in a manner of speaking. http://www.freewarefiles.com/cat_9_165_Backup-Utilities.html

As for the trial crap that comes along with any of the external drives I simply leave those options unchecked! No Yahoo or Google toolbars thank you! The AVG security bar in Grisoft's latest AVG 8.0 includes an antiphising filter and veers you away from crap sites loaded with bugs.

i have that same harddrive..
i tried vista backup but I think there was a problem
I think it wanted me to convert to NTFS but I don't get why it isn't this format already if its better.. im worried there's some disadvantage to NTFS that I don't know about..
