I need to backup my data, should i buy a external backup solution, or buy the hard drives and put them in a external case, any suggestions of brands etc would be helpful.
thanks

Just buy an external HD and then run some thing like Windows Back up. or even simpler just copy the files over !

He's asking how he should obtain an external HDD and what brands to get.

I would buy the HDD and exclosure seperate. In my opinion, it's cheaper that way. Seagate is a really good brand for HDDs. If you have a lot of money you could make a 2.5" external HDD.

I have a question about external hard drives....Can you run programs off of them? Like could you put like you AIM on that and everything or even music or is it just stricly just saving files like school work and things in that nature?

You can run programs off of them depending on the programs. Some programs install system files on your main HDD so you won't be able to use those programs on a different PC but some programs are standalone so you can use them on any PC without installing anything.

Ok cool how do you know what programs will load them to the external? I'm plaining on getting a laptop soon ( either MacBook Pro or HP 6700T custom ) and want to put some files on there so it doesn't take all the space up on the laptop

Well usually it will say if it's standalone or not.

I would advise against Seagate FreeAgent externals. Had a brand new 500GB one go poof a few months back. Just stopped working. Totally unrepairable.

My philosophy - stay away from Seagate/Maxtor and the likes. Their quality control seems to be non-existant. Always get HDDs from one of the big Japanese companies. Samsung/Hitachi etc. They're infinitely more reliable and often cheaper.

Buy a case and then buy a hard drive and do it yourself.. i did and i have 160GB and no need for external power and i love it! it cost be a $110 AU for it :D

They sell the small cases for them? What a good brand to get for a harddrive? I want to have it be a good external one so I can have things on that so my laptop stays nice and fastlol
