i try to safely remove my Seagate ext. hardrive but it says "The device 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device later." any help will be appreciated

sometimes xp does that, I think it's fine to just unplug it cause xp has something built into it that helps keep you from losing data, but I'd turn off the computer and then unplug it to be on the safe side

If you reboot after seeing that messsge does it still say the same thing? Maybe there was a temp file created off the drive that Windows still has open or thinks there is some other file still open on the drive itself. Rebooting should clear that.

Better buy extra wires, because doing this will cause your computer plug holes to suffer from damage. Spend a few dollars on another wire is okay but if your computer spoil, then it is not okay...

Depend on how you rip your wire.

Yeah i get that problems sometimes too with ipods and other external hdds. Usually after closing the explorer window with that drive, it lets me remove it. removing it without safely removing it in xp would damage the device wouldnt it?

If you're running files from your external, it won't be able to stop. For example, if you're running a program that is installed on the external, copying files from the external to the main, etc, it can't stop it. If that's not the problem, well, you got me.
