I have a 3tb Seagate external drive I use for storing photos (I'm a photographer so I have many), music, and various other things. My previous Western Digital 1.5tb drive did this same thing (which is why I replaced it) and it's starting to drive me insane.
The drive has a green on light which indicates when the drive is spinning/ on. Say I'm typing something for school or not currently accessing anything on the drive, the light will turn off and the drive will stop spinning. If I then go to access the external drive, it takes 10-15 seconds to react to any files I try to open from it. I put my computer to sleep more often than I fully shut it down, but upon awakening it or booting it up the same problem persists.
Perhaps the most annoying aspect of it is this happens while I'm working in Photoshop. I do not have it set as a scratch disk, and I don't work on any files that are saved onto the external drive 99.9% of the time. I can be doing any given task in Photoshop, and the program will freeze for again 10-15 seconds until I hear the drive spin back up and everything runs fine again.
I'm pretty computer savvy but I cannot figure this out. My motherboard's USB 3.0 drivers are current as well just FWIW, and my whole system was built in June of 2011. Any ideas of what's going on/ how I can stop this?
Also, these files constantly appear on the drive. If I delete them, they just come back the next time I access the drive from "My Computer"
