External HD problem

I just purchased an external HD enclosure from tigerdirect for use with my old IBM 20GB drive (FAT32). The problem is, it isn't showing up in My Computer. I've tested the drive in a friends' enclosure and it worked just fine, but now it doesn't come up on mine. It had windows98 installed on it, and (through his comp) we just deleted all the files and folders on the drive. I did the general troubleshooting in the manual, and played with the jumpers but nothing works. What should I try?

With 98 you need drivers for any type of external drive. That'd be my first guess...
Correct, but I'm trying to plug it in as an external USB Drive in XP. It isn't even being read in the BIOS.

Oh oh...ok, I see... Sorry, misread.

Well for the jumpers, basically all of them should be set to Master, unless the manual said differently, so just be sure that's set correctly if you played with them...

Have you tried different USB ports on your computer, as you said it worked on your friends machine, correct?

Are you sure you BIOS supports bootable USB drives?

Have you checked computer management? Many times with one of my machines, the drive only shows up there and I must assign a drive letter to it...

I have used different USB ports and actually tried two computers, both XP. This makes me think... the drive is most likely named C:/ and if my computer's main disk is C:/ would it not show up because it has the same name?

Also, where is Computer Managment, do you mean device manager?

First off, it's C:\ ;P

Second, a drive is labled this by your computer, NOT by the drive.

Computer Management - Rightclick on My Computer, click management, then disk management

Did you format the drive or just delete the files? Have you tried setting the jumpers to cable select?
