External HD

Hey folks, how is it going. Just today I got home from work and noticed my external drive wasn't working. I then noticed a flashing light on it.

This drive is a Seagate External Drive and is 1TB

I removed the USB cord from the computer and then I shut down the computer + removed the cord connected to the computer. I was hoping this would resolve the problem after connecting, but I'm afraid it didn't.

I then used a laptop to see if the problem continued and yes it did.

How would I go about to fixing this? I am new to this and would appreciate some help.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply buddy. I believe it is a 2.5" as it's not a huge drive.

I really don't have any other sata cable available at this time.

if I decide to use the internal one and power up the PC. Am i just looking to see if the light continues to flash? Because I assume since no other drive is connected it will not post?

No, you want to connect the drive and boot into Windows as normal, then see if you can access the drive.

Your best bet would be to get the external adapter I linked above. If the drive is good and you can access it, then you can just get another enclosure for it from here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007705 600006255&IsNodeId=1&name=2.5"

thanks for the reply.

I'm going to see if my local Radio Shack has any Sata Cables.

I'll get back if I have any other future questions. Thanks again buddy

Spending $19 on the enclosure i would not recommend. Instead get a NEW 1TB USB 3.0 HDD $59 and keep this as a backup.

Why spend more money on a new drive when you already have a perfectly good drive?

If there is a flashing light on the external harddrive that means its still works,
there might be a possibility that the drive unpartitioned itself so if you have (windows 2000\xp\vista\7\8) cd you should boot up your computer then put the cd in and check if it is not partioned or if it does not read at all your got a damage hard drive but if it is not partitioned, partition it as hi as it goes (recomended) but with the windows 2000\xp cd after it formats shutdown your computer before it starts installing those versions of windows will not really be able to go on an external hard drive but there are some that will work.

I hope this works for ya :)

Then you have a broken harddrive because some unpartitioned stuff can not be detected in windows, one time a had a flash drive and it was not read by windows and i didn't know what was going on so i said on tomshardware.com my flashdrive is not read buy windows so he told me to us any windows cd that is up to date but not 98SE and ME. Then he told me to partition it which it worked but if that didn't work for you sorry bro you have a broken harddrive just go buy a new one for the size a costco or frys electronics for $50.

P.S. I have something that might work if it is a harddrive put it in the freezer for 15min to an hr, that worked for me on time a had a problem with my harddrive.

I hope that works. :)

You haven't seemed to realize that we have yet to determine if it's the enclosure or the actual hard drive.
