I purchased an 80gig western digital hard drive for my laptop and also an enclosure for it from maddog enclosures figured this would be a great way to store things. Nope turns out it only recognizes it as 54.1gig no matter what i do. Its a USB2.0 thing and i have tried maddog and they wont help me without registering which i did when i got it but its not on file i did but i cannot do it again becuase i do not have the upc please anyone that has any suggestions offer them to me.

Steps taken:
1)reformatted it completely didnt work
2)did a check disk and recovery still only 54.1gig
3)tried disk management in xp still nothing
4)turned on hidden files just incase there are none

When you format, does it show the capacity as only 54.1GB? Or does it say 80G(well, I guess it should be something around 74...)

If that doesn't work, try it on another computer, maybe even out of the enclosure and connected to IDE...

the hdd inside the enclosure is a laptop hdd this is a 2.5 i believe enclosure made for them specifically when i format it it says 54.1 and i have tried 3 computers

I know you have a laptop, I was refering to another computer, connecting internally or externally :P

So it says 54G on the format dialog? If so, don't waste your time formatting again as that's all your going to get out of it...

I guess my last attempt would be a low level format. I don't know of a good program right off(espcially considering it's USB...) but that SHOULD fix it, unless the drive's basically shot.

man i hope its not shot becuase its brand new and if it its i'm going to be kinda mad oh well maybe i will just invest in a made for it external hdd and ditch the whole enslosure thing...

Its possible they could have put a 60GB hard drive in the enclosure, that would explain the 54.1 GB.
