External HDD

I have never used an external hdd. I guess I'm just not a storage junkie and I almost always use a second PC to backup the one I'm working on.

But what i'm wondering-is what would you folks recommend in the way of a fast drive with 500GB or more.

Our shop has the Seagate FreeAgent pro's but again, I havent used them myself.

Is eSata the best connection to use with a laptop?

the drive is actually for my father and I'm supposed to know everything--according to him..lol

help peeps

eSATA should be the fastest interface but both USB and firewire are usually fast enough. USB is technically the slowest because it slows down on sustained file transfers but if he will just be moving little files then it will be plenty fast.

I don't know which brands are the best, I'd think they are all about equal but I dont use them myself either.

I have a Western Digital 80GIG and an Iomega 500GIG-firewire and they are both awesome drives! I run movies off the Iomega and music/pictures from the 80 without any hangups.

Okay thanks guys..

See he has an old maxtor drive the is 320GB and it connects to usb.

I will say,,,he was tryin to move nearly 500GB at once, but this silly thing sat there and grinded away for nearly half a day.

On the screen at one point it said 17 hours...34 minutes..

That is crazyyyyyy slow..

is an Esata drive gonna be much faster--

Yes, but I don't know how much time it would take off.
