External HDD's showing up oddly in Vista

Hi, I am new to the board and kind of getting desperate. The situation is that I have a computer with Vista (which I know is my first problem :)). Basically, I have two external HDD's by two different manufacturers that for some reason show up as USB Mass Storage Devices, but ONLY show the respective manufacturer's preinstalled software and they show up in My Computer as CD-ROM drives with like 400kb storage, when one is 250 GB and the other 500GB. Just a few weeks ago I was able to connect either and view the full contents like any drive. Now it just shows the preinstalled software on each drive. I have used the program drivecleanup tonight and still nothing. I have uninstalled the USB drivers in the Device Manager and let Windows re-install and nothing. I am really confused by this. Any help is appreciated.

I should elaborate that one of them I took to work and can view the contents fine and the other I hooked to a PS3 and could view the actual file directory on it.

If you go to disk management does it recognize that there are other partitions on the drive? (start->run->diskmgmt.msc)
