Hi all,
I have a lenovo 3000 c100 laptop which has 20gb hard drive space. I'm looking at getting an external 80gb hard drive to save everything like games music on. Would you be able to recommend any good ones

Is size or portability a factor? I mean for $60, Sam's or Costco had a 320GB 3.5" external hard drive. However, it's rather bulky and requires external power. For more around $100, you could find a 2.5" 120GB drive that's powered by USB. However, 3.5" drives tend to last longer and be a little faster. This is not to say some 2.5" drives can't scream, as my Western Digital Passport is quite fast!

As for brands, the biggest factor is the warranty. Internal or external hard drives will fail eventually. Do not rely on just one method of storage. I would suggest getting a better known hard drive(hopefully it'll be higher quality than cheaper ones...) But that assumingly will also have a good warranty. Should you ever have problems, you can exchange it...

Mainly looking for a fairly potable one that is fairly compact. Price looking for around AU$100-$150. Not too sure on what brands are good.

Ah... I don't know about AU stores or prices...

If you want something portable, you probably want a 2.5" drive. As I said, they don't require external power which really takes away from a drive's portability. I have a 3.5" 80GB I built(you can purchase drives and enclosures seperatly...) Physically it's much larger than my little 2.5" external, and it requires a decent sized power source...

The main brands out there are Maxtor, Seagate, and Western Digital. I have a Western Digital Passport 120GB which is really nice. I hear the Seagate 2.5" drives are rated slightly better, but either or should do fine.

ok thanks for the help. I'll have a look around at some and get back.

Cheap enclosure, decent hard drive inside. It'll probably do fine, but you never know the chipset and all that is being used. Sometimes people complain about the poor quality of these cheaper enclosures, now working with their computers and all...

If you're going to get something like this, you might even consider looking for some enclosure and hard drive to just make it yourself.
