External / Portable Hardrive advice

Hi, First time poster, with an average knowledge of computers,

Just wondering if its possible to connect a portable/external HDD to a home entertainment system, Possibly through an Amp, and be able to watch movies/listen to music stored onto it.

Just wondering if this is possible, and formats needed etc.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Possibly, the unit you want to connect the drive to needs to support them and be able to read the file system (FAT32 is usually a safe pick).
 
Im trying to help my missus with a fathersday present for her father, ill be going to scope it all out on the weekend, and ill get back to you, thanks for the help though, i probably should have come here with abit more information :)
 
as other posters mentioned...depends what you are connecting to... Just an example you can connect an external drive to an xbox360 but it has to be setup properly (correct filesystem + correct conversion for videos etc).
