I use the computer the browse the internet, email, and office functions. My browser stops responding sometimes, and this might be due to low RAM. I would like to run Google Earth, but I don't think my video card is good enough.

I don't play any games or do anything requiring heavy graphics.

The max amount of ram for your machine is only 1gb and frankly it wouldn't help much at all. You should start saving up money for an updated system. I will continue to help you clean up your machine though.

Well that's a long list of specs..

No, you can't add RAM externally. There are no interface ports that are anywhere close to the bandwidth that the RAM module slots on the motherboard can provide.

Could also be crap on the computer. Try running CCleaner, SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition, ADwcleaner and System Ninja. That's the least you could do. Adding an additional 512 MB of RAM may help since a lot of things now a days use a lot of RAM. The Crucial website can recommend RAM. With only 512MB of RAM you can't even run an antivirus Live CD.

Do you think the lack of RAM might be the reason why my browser is running slow?
Yes, and many other reasons.

You're running XP, so if you're using Internet Explorer you are already using a browser that is outdated by 3 versions.

You only have 512MB of RAM, which you should really have 1-2GB minimum.

You have a very outdated and slow processor, not to mention it was the lowest end processor when you bought it 11 years ago.

You only have a 20GB hard drive, most likely a slower 5400RPM speed as well as a high likely hood of being filled up, not allowing for the proper paging file size.

You need a new computer. The cost alone to upgrade DDR memory (there is DDR3 and DDR4 out now) is insanely expensive as it was obsolete many years ago and hard to find.

It also looks like you're still using the original installation of XP from 2003 when you bought the laptop - which would mean that it has probably never been reinstalled.

If you can't get a new computer, I would suggest at least reinstalling XP and you may find that that helps a little bit.

Uninstall Avast and see what happens. I would use Bitdefender Free which is lighter and cloud based. And since your on XP use Sandboxie for your browser. I have a netbook that is about the same spec and it runs fine. If I had that Inspiron 8200 I could make it run without any problems.
