External sound card.

I'm planning on purchasing an external USB sound card for my laptop, since my the onboard sound card has decided to fail. Will my laptop speakers still function with the new sound card, or will I will I have to connect headphones or speakers directly to the new USB sound card?

I am not completely sure but I think you will need to connect headphones or speakers to work it like that. The internals will not access the USB interface. You might want to connect a set of headphones anyway to be sure that the card is bad and not the speakers themselves.
