External to internal HELP!!!

My power supply on my external hard drive failed and i'm told it will take two or three weeks to get a replacemnt PSU. I have files i need to access on it in the meantime. I tried taking it out of the external case and plugging into the IDE controller but XP won't recognise it and says its a network drive or something and needs to be formatted before i can use it. BUT i desperately need these files.:mad::mad::mad: Any help would be appreciated
 
When you plugged it into the IDE controller did you make sure you had it set to slave? I have not seen this happen before even my buddies external that ran FAT32(yuck) would work if he took it out of the case.
