Is the USB 3.0 a bottleneck for a SSD drive?
is it better to just get a 7200 rpm external hard drive and have more storage?

USB 3 can handle SSD speeds. I would only get an SSD external if you need the extra speed. If you just want some external storage I would stick with a standard external.

USB 3.0 has a maximum theoretical bandwidth of 640MB/s, and most desktop SSDs top out around 500-550MB/s.

It really comes down to if you care more about speed or storage capacity per $.

Okay. I bought an external..
It was the easiest way to add a SSD with out opening the back.

I would like to have my Laptop boot from this external and leave the much larger internal for storage.

Is this recommended?

No. If you want to boot from a drive or install applications to a drive, use the internal drive.
