external vs internal modem

ive always heard that you will get faster connection and transfer speeds on dial-up if you use an external modem..is this really true? i know alot of it is also based on the quality of phone lines as well...right now im connected at 38.6kbps which is fairly common, i also get 40kbps alot, and earlier today i nearly pooed myself when i connected at 42.6! haha..and i know thats actually not too shabby for a dial-up user, but if i could eek out some more bandwidth itd be just dandy..so do any of you have any experiences with an external modem compared to an internal one? the modem i have now is a V.92 BCM modem...thats about all i know about it. it came with my Dell.

Usually no difference between external and internal modems, literally, both are the same. The speed you connect at and see once your connection is set up is actually the speed at the moment of the connection. This does not gaurantee that you will be using the same speed all the time or that you are reserving some unchanged bandwidth. If your ISP gets crowded, your speed will drop of course.

That is true. It is rumored that externals are faster, but when i had dialup, my internal beat my brother's internal by about twice the download speed.
