Im trying to put together a budget pc for a family member who needs something for their kids who are starting back to school. They dont have a lot of money to spend, $500 would be the absolute maximum and it has to include monitor, keyboard and mouse and be a basic internet usage/office computer. Nothing fancy. The other catch is that it has to purchasable via amazon (unless newegg is WAY cheaper, but everything ive seen has been amazon in the lead!), preferably with super saver shipping. Lets see what you can come up with! I appreciate your help in advance.

I don't have time to check out item by item in amazon...

Newegg
$499.90 exclude shipping/ MIR. I do recommend spend another $35 to get althon IIx 3 and slight better monitor

I actually dont need an operating system as I will probably go with Ubuntu for them. That looks pretty good though, I would rather swap the mobo and pcu for an intel too.

Any reason to go for ubuntu instead? Nothing bad about open source and all but it's a lot easier on kids to use the same thing on their home computer that they use at school.

I agree but disagree...

Nothing wrong with introducing them to a new OS early on, not only that but for all the more that they will actually be doing with, Ubuntu is more than sufficient.
