Extreme Media Trouble on Vista, HELP!

Ok, so yesterday after I came home from school I tried my usual routine of opening up either Zune or Windows Media Player for music, and when I try to play music in either one, I get an error message saying in WMP: "Media sharing is currently disabled, either because the sharing service is not running or your firewall settings have changed. To restart sharing, you must first confirm your sharing settings" then it freezes with that window open and I need to use task manager to get rid of the WMP window.

When I try Zune and go to play a song or movie or whatever, I get about a fifth of a second of the bar that should mean music at the bottom, then it gets the red X next to it and once everything in that list has an X i get "Zune cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct".

Now, I'm not running on a network, I just have a modem for internet and sometimes switch out the computer ethernet in the modem for a xbox 360 ethernet connection and reset the modem so it works and visa versa, if that has any relevance. I'm pretty computer savvy, but, I haven't got a clue what a proxy is or how to fix it, or what I should do.

I should also mention that trying to download something as a temporary file such as a video to play it in either player does not work either, and streaming videos from websites or youtube has no sound, and about every 10 seconds it stops streaming normally and goes extremely slow and broken up even though the entire video is already pre-loaded. I'm running on vista premium 32 bit, and would love any help, I'm pretty attached to my music. Thanks.

A majority of it is in the "My Music" folder, with a few albums here and there in the "My Downloads" and a song or two scattered in various other folders.

I don't mean to sound like a dick, but my suggestion is to go back to XP. Vista just has way to many problems.

Otherwise, I really have no idea.

No, dude, I totally agree with you. The issue is that I'm broke and only 16, no job, poor family, and this is just the family computer, so I don't have the time or money do get it back. My XP got exploded in a lighting storm, and the only computer we could afford was a vista. sucks so bad, but I'd think there would be a way to fix it.

I should also mention that opening the "network settings" (even though I'm not on a network) in control panel causes the control panel to freeze, also needing to be shut down via task manger. I also tried to stream a radio station, and got no sound. I know my speakers work as I hear IMs and such, but I got nothing from the streaming radio.

Exploded? That basically means that you can get the stuff back. Hook up the HDD and everything from the last computer is there.

The hard drive was fried, we tried to save it but only got a few things here and there. But, I'm still not able to play any media or access the "Network and Sharing" part of the control panel, even though when it freezes it shows that all sharing options are open...
