factory partition on a hard drive

hey i just bought a western digital 500GB hd. while installing it i figured out it is actually a 1TB, with a partition blocking the other 500GB. does anyone know how i can get around that, and use the whole drive?
 
How did you find this out? And if it's blocked at the factory don't you think there just maybe is something wrong with the blocked off sections?
 
wait... so you bought a 500 gb. then someting made you think it was a 1000gb... and now you think that somethings blocking it and only letting you have 500gb? right..
 
if that is true, it means some area 51 sensitive data is stored on the other partition. Just pray it won't blow up
 
lol its not like they had a spare 1tb and blocked half off so they could sell it is a 500gb. where did you see that it was a 1 tb? cos it was probably wrong
 
Hey, don't be so fast to write off this possibility.
When I first got a PC, it was a used one that had a Quantum HD with a model number that said it had a 2.1GB capacity... but only 1.2GB was available for use, according to the Sharpie'd numbers on the top, as well as Device Manager. Even when I reformatted and partitioned it to reinstall Win95, all that would show up is 1.2GB.
 
yes but this is different. be bought it as a 500 and only 500 is available. you bought it as a 2.1 and only 1.2 was available.
 
when i first went to install it, it was saying that it only had 164GB so i downloaded a program that restores the HD back to its factory capacity. when i used it on the HD it told me that there was 500 GB useable space, and 500 GB unuseable, total size 1000 GB. that is how i figured this out. not only that but if you get on WD's website you will see that they use the same drive for both.

im sorry but i am not some dumba** getting on here saying "duh what is a CPU?" believe me i was just as shocked as anyone else. that is why i ran the program 5 times with the same result each time. it is probably cheaper for them to produce 1 hd with 1TB capacity, and partition it. instead of producing 2 models.

I didn't say you were dumb. I did ask what you used to find out and I did say there's probably a good reason it's blocked out. You generally don't half the size of a good drive though. You didn't give us a model # or anything, were we supposed to magically know that you had a WD drive that's supposedly the same drive for 1TB and 500GB drives?

On that note, you didn't say what program you used. Was it one of WD's utilities?
