A fresh install of windows 7 would be needed most likely. Do you know what updates are being installed?

Definitely agree with johnb35, a fresh install of Windows is always the best thing to do. You could always disable Windows updates entirely if you wanted to. Go to start > type in "services.msc" > find "Windows Update > right click > properties > hit "Stop" > Startup type "Disabled". You might want to keep in mind though that you will not receive anymore Windows Updates until you re-enable it from services.msc.

If you haven't reinstalled your computer yet, boot it to Safe Mode (Reboot -> Spam F8, choose Safe Mode with no network)
Once in, delete all the content of "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution". Open run (Start-R) and type "cleanmgr.exe". Mark all checkboxes and reboot.
